Championship roundup: Burnley thrash Plymouth and Leeds return to top

Burnley scored five goals in a stunning first-half performance as they hammered relegation-threatened Plymouth 5-0 at Home Park to continue their promotion charge in the Championship.

Zian Flemming and Josh Laurent bagged braces while Josh Cullen also struck in a remarkable opening 45 minutes to leave the Clarets, unbeaten in 15 games, two points behind second-placed Sheffield United.

Bottom-placed Argyle – under new management with Austrian Miron Muslic replacing Wayne Rooney as head coach two weeks ago – are six points from safety and without a win in 14 league games.

Manor Solomon fired the quickest goal in the Championship this season as Leeds beat Norwich 2-0 at Elland Road to regain top spot.

The Tottenham loanee struck after just 31 seconds against the injury-hit Canaries and Dan James’ second-half effort sealed Leeds’ 12th home league win of the season.

Daniel Farke is unbeaten now in six games as Leeds boss against his former club, while his side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 11 matches to move one point above overnight leaders Sheffield United.

Callum Lang scored his 10th goal of the season as Portsmouth marked John Mousinho’s second anniversary in charge with a 3-1 victory over Stoke.

Colby Bishop bagged an early penalty before Lang and Connor Ogilvie sent Pompey above Stoke up to 18th – their highest position since the end of August.

Ben Wilmot had pulled the score back to 2-1 but the Potters, who have one victory in their last 14, could not prevent Portsmouth from a sixth win in seven home matches to ease their relegation worries.

Ross McCrorie salvaged a late point for Bristol City with his 86th-minute equaliser securing a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
