Private renters in England are spending an increasing proportion of their income on housing, according to the latest official data from the English Housing Survey.
In 2023-24, the proportion of household income spent on housing costs for private renters rose to 34% on average, climbing from 32% for 2022-23.
The proportion of income spent on housing was significantly higher for those on low-incomes. Privately renting households on the lowest incomes spent 63% of their incomes on housing costs in 2023-24, jumping from 56% in 2019-20 – and compares to just 13% of incomes for mortgage-holders on the highest incomes.
We want to hear from people in the UK – across all tenure types – about housing costs as a proportion of their overall gross household income and the affect on their families.
How much of your household income is spent on housing costs? What impact does this have on your quality of life or on managing your living costs? Have your housing costs changed in recent years, and in what ways?
