‘This was on a day trip from Dublin. The person in the photo was spending a lot of time on his selfie so I shot a couple of frames with the dark sky behind, but when he stood up on to the bench seat, I knew I had a good frame. I took a series of photos of tourists in famous places in front of iconic sites, which wasn’t hard to do, and called it Bloody Tourists, of which I was surely one.’

  • Siberut, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

‘During my stay with the Mentawai tribe, I had the opportunity to learn different aspects of their lifestyle. One of the most interesting was this early-morning moment when the elders started poisoning the arrow tips with a potion made out of jungle herbs before going hunting. After getting the juice out of three different leaves, they heat it and the smear the liquid on the arrow tips. The poison content is enough to kill animals like pigs, squirrels, monkeys and deer.’
