TV tonight: the heartbreaking story of a forbidden affair during the Troubles

2 hours ago 5

Trespasses

9pm, Channel 4

Lola Petticrew played Dolours Price in last year’s Say Nothing, and here she is in another brilliant drama about the Troubles. Based on Louise Kennedy’s hit novel, it is a story about the forbidden affair of star-crossed lovers – or rather, a Catholic and a Protestant in 1970s Northern Ireland. Cushla (Petticrew) is a Catholic teacher who also pulls pints in her family’s pub, where she meets Michael (Tom Cullen), an older “posh Prod” barrister. Cushla can see just how dangerous this is, yet Michael’s pull on her is too strong. Their performances are cracking (as is Gillian Anderson’s as Cushla’s alcoholic but sharp mother Gina). But this secret relationship surely cannot end well … Hollie Richardson

Hippos and elephants do a lot of scaring away predators in the opener to this new David Attenborough-narrated nature series. Despite their confidence, it’s the leopards, dogs, hyenas and lions who are fighting to dominate the South Luangwa national park in Zambia. This six-parter follows them all at it. HR

Game of Wool: Britain’s Best Knitter

8pm, Channel 4

There was an inevitability about the arrival of a competition show involving knitting. In the second episode of this winter warmer, the contenders craft dog outfits that combine creativity and wearability. It’s tougher than it sounds. Tom Daley, Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell guide and judge. Phil Harrison

Dance Passion Bradford

8pm, BBC Four

This city-wide celebration of dance lands in Bradford, where the Royal Ballet’s Natalia Osipova will follow in the en pointe footsteps of the great Anna Pavlova by performing on the same Alhambra stage a century later. Meanwhile, out on the wily, windy moors, 500 dancers gather to celebrate Wuthering Heights – both Brontë’s and Bush’s. Ellen E Jones

Riot Women

9pm, BBC One

After last week’s brutal events, Nisha is in a bad way in hospital, while Kitty is facing the repercussions of socking one to Tom’s slimy father-in-law. Will Holly be able to help Nisha find justice? Will Kitty tell Beth what provoked her? Yet more brilliant writing in the penultimate episode of Sally Wainwright’s drama. HR

Daisy May and Charlie Cooper’s NightWatch

9.30pm, BBC Two

Sir Humphry Wakefield saved Northumberland’s Chillingham Castle from demolition in the 1980s – and he’s been experiencing curious ghostly going-ons ever since. Enter the Cooper siblings, who will be having a sleepover and trying to avoid the curse of the Spanish Witch. But, Humphry insists, “there are lovely ghosts here!”. HR

“What do women see that men don’t?” That’s the question driving Margy Kinmonth’s enlightening history of female artists and how they respond to war. It ranges in time from second world war painters such as Laura Knight to the present-day likes of Fiona Banner and Rachel Whiteread; and geographically from Iran to Sudan to Ukraine. We see skilled artists using a range of techniques to reveal the underreported, female-centred aspects of conflict, with a focus on the many neglected talents who deserve a more prominent place in the cultural conversation.
