Championship: Leeds slip up at Blackburn as Hull’s woes go on at Boro

1 month ago 10

Todd Cantwell’s first-half penalty clinched Blackburn a 1-0 victory over Leeds at Ewood Park as Daniel Farke’s side missed out on the chance to return to the top of the Championship.

Sheffield United’s defeat of Sunderland a day earlier meant Leeds came into this clash in second spot. And they fell short in their efforts to leapfrog the Blades after Cantwell’s 22nd-minute spot-kick secured Rovers’ third successive win and boosted their playoff challenge.

The visitors pressed hard for an equaliser but when they did find the net, Largie Ramazani’s 82nd-minute effort was ruled out for offside. And had Cantwell made more of two good second-half chances, Blackburn’s margin of victory might have been even greater.

Managerless Hull’s miserable run continued with a 3-1 loss at Middlesbrough, their fifth straight league defeat. Andy Dawson was in interim charge of the Tigers after Tim Walter’s midweek dismissal but couldn’t stop the rot, with City now winless in their last 10 league games.

Finn Azaz continued his superb run of form with a fifth goal in three games to set Boro on their way, before Tommy Conway doubled the home side’s lead just before half-time. Hull substitute Mason Burstow gave the Tigers hope when he halved the deficit 19 minutes from time, but Conway secured the points with his second and Boro’s third goal eight minutes later. Carrick’s side have now won four of their past five games and are the division’s top scorers.

Tyler Goodrham’s brilliant 85th-minute equaliser brought Oxford United a 1-1 draw with playoff chasers Millwall at the Kassam Stadium – and their first point in four games.

The Lions had looked comfortable as they led through Japhet Tanganga’s 45th-minute header and the home side had created very little in an uninspiring encounter. But from Cameron Brannagan’s square pass outside the box, and with the clock ticking down, Goodrham hit a stunning left-footed drive into the top-right corner to earn struggling Oxford a precious point. The draw means that Millwall extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to nine games, but they will be disappointed to have let this one slip.

Watford equalled a club record unbeaten run at Vicarage Road but were left frustrated by a 0-0 draw against relegation-threatened QPR. The hosts made it 15 home games without defeat to equal the run set by Graham Taylor’s side in 1997, but missed an opportunity to close in on the Championship automatic promotion places.
