Born in San Francisco in 1921 to Japanese immigrant parents, Yasuhiro Ishimoto was raised on the island of Shikoku in Japan, where, in the normal course of things, he would have taken over the family farm. Instead, he turned out to be one of the major figures in 1950s and 60s American and Japanese photography, yet his work is not widely known. All photos by Yasuhiro Ishimoto, whose Lines and Bodies is at Le Bal, Paris, until 22 December
